Understanding attendance policies before choosing a course

Kemon Poray editorial guidance · Last reviewed

Attendance expectations can affect your timetable, assessment and ability to keep up with a course. For a university course in Bangladesh, use official current rules as your first source. Student reviews can describe classroom experience, but they should not replace the policy that applies to your enrollment.

Find the rule that actually applies

Check the university, department and course documents for attendance requirements. Do not assume one professor's past practice represents the whole institution. If the documents appear inconsistent, ask the appropriate course or department contact for clarification. Keep the answer through normal university channels. A public rating cannot establish which rule governs a particular course.

Separate attendance from participation

Being present and contributing to class are different expectations. A seminar may require discussion, while a lab may involve supervised work that cannot be repeated easily at home. Read how any participation component is assessed. When reviews mention 'strict attendance,' look for an explanation of the practice rather than assuming that strictness means poor teaching.

Understand the missed-class process

Ask where announcements, materials and assignments are posted and what students should do after an absence. If you have a known scheduling constraint, seek guidance before registration. Do not assume that an exception granted in one situation will apply to everyone. Reviews should discuss the process without disclosing a student's medical, family or other private circumstances.

Check the practical timetable

Consider travel time, back-to-back classes, labs and assessment sessions alongside your commitments. A course can have reasonable rules and still be difficult for your schedule. Confirm details with the current timetable, since old reviews may reflect another semester. Choose using the combination of official requirements and relevant experience rather than a reputation for relaxed attendance alone.

Rate clarity and consistency

Useful feedback explains whether expectations were communicated, whether changes were announced and how class time was used. Keep your description within what you personally observed. Avoid recommending ways to evade the rules or judging a professor only by leniency. Future students benefit most from knowing what they will need to plan for.

Privacy and contributing

Public ratings and reviews do not display your email or account label. Account associations remain privately stored to prevent duplicates and control abuse. Google sign-in and a permanent university and department assignment do not prove enrollment. Only rate professors you have studied with and are eligible to rate through the existing account rules.

Find a professor and share your experience

Open a professor page, choose Rate professor, and follow the sign-in and affiliation steps. Written reviews use the existing rating flow and moderation rules.
