How to choose a professor before course registration
Kemon Poray editorial guidance · Last reviewed
A professor's overall rating is a starting point for course selection, not a complete recommendation. Before registration at a university in Bangladesh, compare the course requirements with the teaching practices that help you learn. A popular course can still be a poor fit for your timetable or preparation.
Check the course before the professor
Read the current course outline, prerequisites and assessment schedule. Confirm the assigned instructor through an official university source because appointments and teaching allocations can change. A professor profile may cover experiences from several courses. A positive review from an introductory class will not answer every question about a later course with different material, projects and expectations.
Choose your priorities explicitly
Write down what you need most: clear explanations, detailed feedback, predictable scheduling, practical exercises or room to ask questions. Separate a requirement from a preference. If you work during part of the week, attendance and assessment timing may be essential. If you are taking a subject for the first time, explanations and support may matter more than a reputation for easy marks.
Look for concrete patterns in reviews
Compare several accounts where available. Repeated descriptions of a teaching practice are more useful than repeated praise without examples. Ask whether the feedback describes current course conditions, whether the reviewer explains the context, and whether there are enough contributions to identify a pattern. Missing feedback means uncertainty. It should not automatically count against a professor.
Turn uncertainty into questions
If students disagree about workload, ask what assignments the course currently requires. If a review mentions unclear grading, ask whether a rubric or sample answer is available. Phrase questions neutrally and direct them through normal course channels. Your goal is to understand the course, not to ask an instructor to defend anonymous comments.
Make a choice you can explain
Compare the available options against the priorities you wrote down. Keep a demanding course if the learning benefit and time commitment fit your plan. Avoid treating a small difference in average score as decisive. After completing the course, your own specific feedback can help the next student make the same comparison with better information.
