Course selection at public and private universities in Bangladesh

Kemon Poray editorial guidance · Last reviewed

A university's public or private label does not tell you how much freedom you have at registration. Course sequences, section assignments and prerequisites vary by institution, department and semester. Start with your department's current rules, then use professor feedback for the choices that are actually available to you.

Find out what you can choose

Check whether you select a section, request an elective, follow a fixed cohort or receive an assigned timetable. Ask the department which changes are permitted and when they close. A review of a professor in another section is useful context, but it is not an available alternative if registration rules prevent switching. Do not assume a private university always offers free choice or a public university never does.

Check prerequisites before comparing professors

Confirm required courses, credit limits, lab pairings and the sequence needed to graduate. A popular elective may delay a required course or clash with a lab. Build a timetable that meets those constraints first. If there is a genuine choice of instructor or section, compare how the professor teaches the specific course you will take.

Read the current outline and assessment policy

An older review may describe a grading scheme that has changed. Check the latest outline for exam weights, assignments, attendance rules and deadlines. Ask where marking rubrics and recheck procedures are published. A professor's reputation cannot replace the official requirements for passing a course, regardless of the university's ownership type.

Balance the semester, not just one course

Compare workload peaks across your courses. Several individually manageable courses may all schedule projects in the same week. Ask about group-work expectations and lab preparation. If you work, commute or have family responsibilities, include those hours in your schedule. Choose a sustainable combination rather than treating the highest professor score as the only goal.

Use reviews for practical questions

Turn specific feedback into questions you can ask an adviser or current student. If several reviews mention late feedback, ask when marked assignments are returned. If reviews disagree about attendance, check the current policy. Use the university directory to locate the correct department and professor, and verify similar names before relying on an entry.

Privacy and contributing

Public ratings and reviews do not display your email or account label. Account associations remain privately stored to prevent duplicates and control abuse. Google sign-in and a permanent university and department assignment do not prove enrollment. Only rate professors you have studied with and are eligible to rate through the existing account rules.

Find a professor and share your experience

Open a professor page, choose Rate professor, and follow the sign-in and affiliation steps. Written reviews use the existing rating flow and moderation rules.
